Create a Website

Basics
(1) Websites are created using HTML codes, and sometimes with Java script. When viewed with a browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator they then appear as words and graphics all nicely formatted. They can all be put on a lengthy single page, or split into several pages which are linked. (By clicking on wording or an object, the browser is made to jump to a particular location on the same webpage, or another page, or to a completely different website.)
Browsers
HTML code can be written with a word processor, or more easily by using a webpage creation tool or program. Both Netscape and Internet Explorer provide such tools free with their browsers (called Netscape Composer and Frontpage Express, respectively). More sophisticated programs like Frontpage or Dreamweaver can be purchased

(2) For a website to actually appear on the Internet (rather than just on a computer or network), then website hosting is needed. A server connected permanently to the Internet stores the webpages and, if the location address is known, anyone can access those pages with a browser.

Web Design Software
Some hosting companies, like KBS,
provide a webpage creation program.
Dreamweaver
Should you want to write or add to the code yourself, then there are reference books available to help.

Uploading to a Website
(4) Once webpages have been created and a website host has been obtained, the webpages need to be uploaded to the website. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) programs are provided by some webpage design packages, like Dreamweaver. Otherwise, a program like Ipswitch's WS_FTP could be used.
Click the above for the free version of WS_FTP (WS_FTP_LE). WS_FTP_PRO can be bought if you are not eligible for the free version.
Email
(5) A domain name can be used as an email address, eg enq@yourname.com. Mail sent to such an address can be redirected to an existing email address, such as that provided by your ISP, or delivered to "mailboxes" that come with your website hosting.
EconomicHosting.com provides email redirection
(forwarding) free with its hosting plans. However,
mailboxes can also be purchased if required.
Mail in a "mailbox" can be viewed directly, downloaded using a program like Outlook Express, or collected using the "check other mail" feature provided by Yahoo, Hotmail etc.

Adding a Counter to Your Site

(6) A counter, like the one to the right, can often be added to your webpage to record visitor statistics. This feature comes free with Economic Hosting's own packages, being one of several free cgi functions that are provided. Other functions include Mailform - which allows a form on a website to be completed by a visitor, and then submitted to a pre-selected email address.
